Marc Wagner

Paint

Discovering the works of Marc Wagner is always an invigorating plunge into colour. The artist has an extraordinary personality as a colourist that Gauguin, the Douanier Rousseau and the Fauvists would not have denied, and he turns the painting into a window onto the visible world or onto fragments tinged with impressions, reminiscences and inner emotions.

These landscapes are to be understood as experimental fields. While the painter bases his work on real sites discovered on his travels, they are transformed by his imagination. They then appear to us with great topographical freedom and a jubilant palette. Marc Wagner often likes to tickle our perception. Perspective is lost, the vanishing point eludes us, and the bird's-eye views are vertiginous. We are unsettled, disorientated and at the same time transported to a poetic elsewhere.

In his narrative scenes, the artist does not shy away from incongruous, droll confrontations tinged with gentle irony and critical verve. (....)

But rest assured, Marc Wagner is not one to give lessons. If he picks up his brushes, it's to express on canvas his pleasure in painting, which for him resonates with the joy of sharing, communicating and exchanging with the observer. He offers us a vision of nature and the world rich in poetic abundance, but also the fruit of research and experimentation...(Text: Nathalie Becker, September 2018)
