Gilles Kutten

Drawing

Never lazy, never awake. Contradictory ideas, paradoxes, opposing traditions, mixing subconscious and limited reality in a whirlwind of things. Gilles Kutten has a plan and a vision of how his work might come to life, but he loses track of the process while dreaming and witnessing everyday life. His detailed drawings exist in opposition to his attention deficit and inner conflicts.

His drawing speaks of life itself, a global sweep that clings to existential manifestations and observations that are non-specific or seemingly of imminent importance. Like a quod libet of dreams and fantasies, fears and, above all, death itself. Blending pop culture and mysticism, his drawings speak of beauty and decadence. It's an endless tug-of-war of opposites and an allergen to the absurdity and mystery of existence itself.

With a master's degree in visual arts, working full-time as an art teacher, father of two sons and husband to his wife, Gilles Kutten sees his art as an instinctive drive towards personal fulfilment. It takes time in its essence because it is timeless in its presence. The egocentricity of the act of artistic creation matches his personality, self-doubt and sociopathic traits that dance in unison to a gentle syncopated rhythm that represents a blend of optimism and nihilism.

If you ask Gilles Kutten what he considers to be the most important part of his process, he will tell you about his need to include space, plasticity and physicality in his drawings. Visually but also conceptually, as space can be seen as a void waiting to be filled with meaning or simply presence. Geometry and the body invested in the creation of places.

What's more, his drawings speak of the influences and inspiration he finds in gaming culture, having spent countless hours in virtual realities and the ninth art: from Spiderman to graphic novels, from 'comic books' via Taniguchi to manga and Asian culture. He considers Max Ernst to be the epicentre of his creative process, citing Albrecht Dürer, Neo Rauch, Katsuya Terada and Olivier DZO as his main influences. Curious about all aspects of life, he spends hours playing board games, reading books, riding rollercoasters, collecting objects, playing electronic music and watching people and the world go round.
