Art on the Street: art in the city's busy shops

Initiated in October 2018 by the City of Luxembourg and carried out in collaboration with the Union Commerciale de la Ville de Luxembourg and the online art platform Art Work Circle, the "Art on the Street" project consists of exhibiting works of art by Luxembourg and Greater Region artists in the windows of temporarily unoccupied commercial premises in the city centre and Gare district. The project has evolved and now extends to the windows of active shops.

Until 4 December 2019 inclusive, 9 works can be discovered in rue Beaumont, avenue de la Porte-Neuve and rue des Capucins: a painting by Dany Prum, photographs by Anna Krieps, engravings, offset prints, a landscape and a sculpture by Ben Carter and an oil painting on canvas by Doris Drescher.

Adding value to businesses and visibility for artists

The 'Art on the Street' project fits in perfectly with the City of Luxembourg's overall concept of economic and commercial development, and also meets the City's objectives in terms of cultural policy. On the one hand, the project enhances shop windows while creating a new dynamic among shopkeepers, and on the other, it promotes artistic creation by offering a platform for artists to gain visibility.

With the development of the "Art on the Street" project, the art gallery, which is accessible 24/7, is expanding and enabling citizens and visitors strolling through the streets of the capital to discover the works of national and regional artists.

Since its launch, the "Art on the Street" project has already seen the participation of 15 commercial premises in Luxembourg City and the exhibition of works by 11 artists: Ben Carter, Doris Drescher, Frank Jons, Anna Krieps, Rom Lammar, Chantal Maquet, Mik Muhlen, Dany Prum, Armand Strainchamps, Jeanine Unsen and Christian Wilmes.

The caterer Cocottes (3, rue Beaumont) is showcasing a large-scale painting by the Luxembourg artist Dany Prum depicting a hen in the entrance hall of a house. The work, placed near the restaurant's typical gastronomic products, echoes the name of the establishment and its logo.

The bookshop Alinéa (5, rue Beaumont) has chosen to present a photograph ofAnna KriepsAll Men are Players 1 "A masked figure with a disquieting appearance, appropriate for this time of year, when the atmosphere is bathed in the atmosphere ofHalloween and the forthcoming arrival of Houseker. The work coexists with a selection of art books specially chosen for the occasion.

Luxury shirts Di Verso (10, rue Beaumont) has chosen to exhibit two engravings by the English artist living in Luxembourg Ben Carter. The two steel plates Mudam Stairs 1 and Mudam Stairs 2 placed symmetrically side by side represent the well-known spiral staircase of the Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM), creating a "recto verso" effect. The graphic, linear aspect of the motif is a perfect match for the shop's clean, simple window display.

The florist Ellébore Flowers (16, rue Beaumont) is home to a window full of plants and flowers and an oil painting on canvas by the artist Doris Drescher entitled 'The Garden of Cyrus'. The title of the work refers to the work of the same name by the writer Sir Thomas Browne, published in 1658, in which the author discusses the interconnection of art and nature through the interdependent symbols of the number five and the quincunx motif.

The women's clothing boutique Mim'z  (22, rue Beaumont) has also fallen in love with the art of Ben Carter and has chosen an offset print entitled Three Arches "representing the capital's Viaduct. The image of the architecture provides a rhythmic accompaniment to the mannequins in the shop front, with a modern, urban feel.

The children's shoe shop The Marquis of Lily (23, rue Beaumont) is exhibiting another photograph byAnna Kriepsa silver print limited to 3 copies from the " All Men are Players 4  "The photograph shows a group of children playing in a drained swimming pool. One child wears a lion mask, while another looks into the photographer's lens.

The shop Mim'z Accessories (22, Avenue de la Porte-Neuve) has chosen a different offset print from Ben Carter representing the Red Bridge Red Bridge "seen from a low angle. The modern architecture of the bridge contrasts with the houses below. The work is a reminder of the presence of the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge near the shop.

The clothes shop Bogner (19, rue des Capucins) is home to a magnificent landscape of Ben Carter entitled "UNESCO ". The print shows a view of the Luxembourg fortress, with the Luxembourg-City and Kirchberg plateaus in the background. The work was commissioned by the Luxembourg Post Office for the creation of a stamp celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of Luxembourg.è anniversary of Luxembourg as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Finally, the streetwear boutique Olliwood Skateshop (19, rue des Capucins) is exhibiting in its window, alongside its skateboards, a sculpture in steel and gold leaf by Ben Carter representing the Skatepark de la Pétrusse.
